Tutorial Tuesday: How does an altimeter work?

#SuuntoClimb, #SuuntoSki, #TutorialTuesday / 15 huhtikuuta 2014

This Tuesday we will guide you to the secrets of measuring altitude. An important point to remember is that an altimeter watch measures air pressure to calculate altitude. As weather changes affect the pressure – and altitude readings – you should from time to time calibrate the altimeter by setting a known current altitude (reference altitude).

In addition to the barometric altimeter the Suunto Ambit GPS watches have a feature called FusedAlti. It provides an altitude reading that is a combination of GPS and barometric altitude. This feature minimizes the effect of temporary and offset errors in the final altitude reading.
