Once again, Suunto is proud to be a partner of the event. Each athlete will be equipped with the Ambit2, which is ideally suited to cope with the tough demands of the race.
“It's not just a physical challenge,” says Hannes Arch, Red Bull X-Alps mastermind. “It's about the body and the mind. The athletes have to perform for 18 hours a day and sustain that for more than 10 days. It's a real adventure!”
By foot or by paraglider, athletes must pass 10 turnpoints and cross five countries on their grueling way to the finish line. The race requires expert paragliding skill as well as a very high level of endurance fitness – it’s not uncommon for athletes to hike up to 100km in a day. In 2011, Toma Coconea covered an incredible 981km on foot.
Among the athletes are some of the world's leading adventurers. They include Everest summiteers and record-breaking paraglider pilots.
Packed in a glass fiber reinforced casing with a battery life of up to 50 hours in GPS mode, the Ambit2 is the perfect partner for these intrepid adventurers. It gives accurate pace, speed, distance and altitude and features a 3D compass — all essential aids for the Red Bull X-Alps, both during training and the race, whether on the ground or in the air.
It's also built to survive the harshest conditions, which the athletes will certainly encounter on their way to Monaco. Suunto wishes all the athletes the best of luck as they begin this epic adventure.
