SUUNTO INSIDE 70 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
It was the beginning of the 1930s when surveyor and championship-level orienteer Tuomas Vohlonen got
fed up with the compasses of the day, which had undamped needles that tended not to settle. Mr. Vohlonen
decided to settle for nothing less than a properly working compass and created his first prototype out
of a Vaseline pot, with a top made from the lid of his wife’s powder box. It worked!
In 1933 Mr. Vohlonen was granted a patent for his liquid filled compass production method, and in 1936
he founded Suunto Ltd.
Now it is time to celebrate the company’s 70 year anniversary. See the highlights of Suunto’s history at
www.suunto.com/70y. The site is available in English, Finnish, German and Spanish. More languages will follow by mid February.

Suunto Experience Story Winners Are Chosen
For the 70 year celebration, a Suunto Experience Story competition was arranged and lots of great stories
were received. Suunto thanks all the participants and congratulates Kalle Lyytikäinen and Ray Fitzsimmons,
whose stories were chosen to be published at www.suunto.com. They are now both happy Suunto X3HR owners.
One of the winners, Kalle Lyytikäinen from Finland, describes his underwater exploration to a sunken barge
in the Gulf of Finland. Read more.
In the other winning story, Ray Fitzsimmons from England writes about his mountaineering expedition to a remote part of
eastern Greenland. Read more.
Suunto is celebrating its 70 year anniversary throughout 2006. The history-related content will be frequently
updated at www.suunto.com and www.suunto.com/70y and we will tell you about the updates in the coming Suunto Insides.
