Four months, 400 photographs, 50 countries, and a couple of expert judges add up to one thrilling photo competition.

The stunning first place winner, “Dolphin in the Winter,” was submitted by Amir Weidenfeld of Israel. “There are elements of surprise, drama, and speed in the picture,” said judge Ralf Åström, “Rain clouds in the background distinguish this photo from photos in diving magazines which are normally presented with the sun shining in a clear blue sky. I could easily imagine seeing a picture like this in National Geographic.”

Kimmo Hagman, the second judge in the competition, also saw Amir’s picture as a clear winner: “The picture conveys speed and drama. The split picture, with dolphins in the focal point, dark clouds in the background and attractive colors result in an enticing winning picture.”

A seriously fun hobby

Jump in and enjoy reading our newest Diving World feature—our Ambassador blogs! This month we introduce a feature written by Finnish TV presenter Heikki Paasonen. Heikki chronicled his days on a live-aboard in the Red Sea as he worked on his Divemaster certification and scoped out some frighteningly large moray eels. Reading his blog is almost as good as being there! Learn more about Heikki.

A seriously fun profession

We’ve all dreamed of owning our own dive shop in a tropical paradise, but be assured that it takes a lot of hard work. Read what managing director Janne Miikkulainen of Raya Divers, one of Thailand's biggest PADI 5-star dive centers, has to say about the ins and outs of the business.

Not your typical day at the office

The rigors of commercial diving were put to the test in the world’s first professional commercial divers’ competition this past March. The three day competition was held at the Ojamo Diving Center in Lohja, Finland.
