Bikini Atoll is located in the Pacific Ocean and it consists of 36 islands, which surround the 594.1 km² (229.4 square-mile) Bikini Lagoon. This lagoon was used as a graveyard for ships during World War II and today it still remains a home to many ships and vessels. Due to the atoll's limited services and most of all to the dangers of radioactivity caused by the nuclear tests between 1946 and 1958 in the area, divers have stayed away from this potential dive site for many years. During the past ten years, however, Bikini Lagoon has become a popular dive destination among divers due to its extensive sea life and various naval wrecks.
