Story

Nate, tell us about yourself and your snowboarding background:

I grew up in the mountains of land-locked Idaho. My father and his friends loved to surf but were clearly up against geographical challenges. Instead, they would take their surfboards and hike the foothills of the valley trying to surf down them. We have all these pictures that became Christmas cards of my dad in his bathing suit snow surfing the valley. In 1984 he got a Burton Backhill - all wood, screw-on fins, rope, rubber straps for bindings. I was eight, I wanted in. By the time I was 11, I had cast off skiing. The local mountain finally allowed us to use the chairlifts, and competitions were springing up in the west. At 16 I was named to the first World Junior Team, and at 18 I began competing in World Cups. I took time away from competition to finish my degree, but in 2004 I began racing snowboardcross. That choice has taken me through Europe, South America, Canada, New Zealand, and the US, competing in everything from races for loaves of bread, to Olympic qualifiers, to the X-games. In 2006 I was named to the US Snowboard Team. It is, by far, the most fun thing I have ever done.

What is your Suunto Experience?

I use my Suunto t6 every time I train - on snow or off. Being able to see and review what my body is doing during a race run has allowed me to tailor my training in a way I never imagined I could. Just seeing the information was a revelation, but to then use that information to shape the training took everything to the next level. Confidence is born of preparation.

Nate's Season Highlights:

2006 X-games, 11th, 2007 Invitee
2005 South American Championships, Valle Nevado, Chile, 1st
2005 Europa Cup, Zermatt Switzerland, 1st
2006 X-games Qualifer, Jabra Jam, 3rd

And the future goals:
To be a contender in every race I enter.
