R&D in Suunto

Author: R&D Team

They call me a sports nerd - but thatīs ok. I know what I'm doing and I know where I'm going. I work at Suunto R&D with a bunch of other similar minded YUPīs, Young Useful Propeller heads. I like challenges and problem solving - as engineers usually do.

I have many talents: one of my strengths is designing small but sturdy mechanical devices. My designs are waterproof because I don't want our customers to worry about it when they are in action - whether diving or conquering Everest. I am also an electronics specialist: I master microelectronics design to make miniature measurement systems, which utilize the latest developments in micro sensor technology, and wireless data transfer.

Most of my work, however, is writing software. The mathematician in me can solve complex equations and generate algorithms for processing measurement data. The data is always processed to a stage and form in which it is easily usable and understandable. This principle carries throughout the entire product range: from mobile sports instruments to Suunto PC and Net software.

Besides being a technology freak - which I am proud of - I also have a softer side: I understand that aesthetics is important in product design. People only buy products that look good on them. Thatīs why my work always starts from the initial design, making sure that the product suits the user and the environment.

The same applies to the usability. I want our products to be intuitive and easy to operate. For example, the diving computers I have developed are perfect context-aware instruments. The computer knows automatically what the diver is doing at each stage of a dive and displays only the information that is needed. Replacing the luck factor.

So, thatīs what Iīm like. Serious but fun. Sporty but nerdy. A gifted pioneer.
