Preparing for an Off-Piste Run

How to prepare for an off-piste run?

1. Always tell others where you are going and when you are coming back. If you do not know the resort, hire a professional guide to find the best spots safely. Never go alone.

2. Never go without an avalanche transceiver, a probe or a shovel. Learn to use your safety equipment properly and always test your equipment in advance. Keep all your equipment in good shape and know how they function.

3. Plan your run properly: Get familiar with resort maps and consult other skiers, guides and local services. Get familiar with the snow and weather conditions of the past days and weeks. If possible, climb up the route that you are planning to ski down.

4. Never choose a run that does not match up with your skills. Do not choose a difficult run, when you are tired or when conditions are dangerous. Investigate the snow, possible escape routes, rocks, cliffs, safety spots etc. Do a snow block test and analyze the structure of different snow layers.

5. Do not ski across the run, which might release an avalanche. Do not stop in the middle of a run.

6. When skiing in a group, ski down one by one, not together.
