The ispo Outdoor Award 2004
|
The international jury evaluated this season's new products in the categories of textile, footwear, hardware and special. The ispo Outdoor Award 2004 was given to Suunto X9 for the hardware category. The Suunto X9 was awarded for its functionality, technical solutions, innovation, quality, user friendliness and design.
Ispo is the biggest general sporting goods show in Europe where all leading international brands exhibit their innovations twice a year. A professional jury chose the Suunto X9 after an intensive review of its functionality and usability.
Suunto X9 is a versatile navigation instrument for every outdoor enthusiast. It is the world's smallest GPS receiver, which in addition to GPS functions has an electronic compass, barometer, thermometer, altimeter, and extensive memory functions.
All this combined into one watch-sized unit that is always at hand not only enhances safety but also adds a whole new dimension to the outdoor experience.
Among other functions, the Suunto X9 shows the direction and the remaining distance to the next waypoint and calculates the estimated time of arrival, when navigating on a preplanned route. For spontaneous activities Suunto X9 shows the current speed and the distance traveled as soon as the GPS is activated. The 'Find home' function always shows the way back to the marked 'Home' position and the "Track back" guides back along any recorded track. The included PC software supports the use of wrist unit with a variety of planning, visualizing, and analyzing functions.

Suunto X9 - The Most Impressive Item
|
Each year around eighteen thousand (18,278) industry participants descend upon the city of the Salt Lake. Their challenge? To locate and order the latest and most exciting products for next season (spring / summer 2005). With over 800 vendors (876), this can be quite a challenge, especially when the second biggest challenge is to drink as much beer as possible.
Karrimor pack designer and self-confessed gear freak Larry O checked out what's new and interesting. Here's his report about Suunto X9:
"The most impressive item that I saw at OR, and definitely worth studying carefully is the new Suunto X9 GPS watch. Although it will be quite pricy, no confirmed price for the UK at this time, the watch has all the GPS functions needed to navigate. Additionally, altimeter, barometer, and computer interface builds on the existing Suunto technologies. My best idea regarding the watch is the ability to drink as much as you like and then just press home and show it to the taxi driver. Probably a bit excessive, but seems like a fun idea."
