Suunto Coach Seminars in August 2005
|
The lecturers at the seminar included world-famous experts in the field of sports physiology, sports coaches, and Suunto personnel.
Both days were opened by Roger Talermo, CEO of Amer Sports, who reminded the participants that the utilization of information technology in sports is still in its infancy. He also described his vision of how applied measurement technology could provide real benefits for coaches and athletes alike.

The main lecturer at the seminars was South African professor Timothy Noakes, who himself has a strong athletic background, having participated in over 70 marathons and several extreme competitions.
He has published 350 research papers and three books, of which the much-renowned marathon runner's bible, "The Lore of Running", deserves particular mention. Since 1989, he has been the director of the medical research council of the University of Cape Town's Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Noakes' main topic at the seminar was the "Central Governor Model".

Professor Heikki Rusko from the University of Jyväskylä also gave lectures on both days, his topic covering the measurement of the variations in heart rate. His lecture also covered EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) and how EPOC affects the body's recovery and return to equilibrium.
The first seminar day also saw Hċkan Widlund and Tobias Karlsson, the coaches of the Swedish heptathlete, Carolina Klüft, take the stage. The previous day, Carolina Klüft had won the World Championship, and this was evident from the coaches' faces. They described the coaching techniques used on Klüft, and also talked about her diet, emphasizing that she does not use any supplements.
Finally, Terho Lahtinen, Product Manager at Suunto, showcased the Suunto t6 wristop computer, and the Suunto Team POD, specially designed for coaching purposes, demonstrating its operation with the help of some gymnasts. The participants had the chance to familiarize themselves with the product in more detail during the breaks with the help of Suunto personnel.
After the seminar, a feedback questionnaire was sent to all participants. The feedback for both Suunto and the lecturers was extremely positive, and similar seminars were welcomed in the future.
