Suunto's Millionth Dive Computer

Millionth Suunto diving computer was completed November 1st 2005.

Seventy-year-old Suunto is continually advancing on its original innovations, from liquid-filled field compasses to cutting edge, hi-tech dive computers. From the original Suunto marching compass, a new, legendary class of first-rate dive computers was born. It began in the 1960s in England, when a professional diver happened to use a field compass underwater. Creatively inspired, he contacted Suunto and suggested certain modifications that would eventually bring compasses to an entirely new level. Needless to say, his suggestions were well received and happily implemented by Suunto, but nobody could have guessed what was to follow.

In 1987, the product development team began working on a project that would eventually become a true success story: the SME dive computer. The computer's expert calculation programs were created by Suunto's own Ari Nikkola. So well known were his calculation programs within the diving community, that they came to be known as "Suunto-Nikkola's algorithms."

Eighteen years have passed since SME was developed and Suunto is now the world market leader in producing dive computers.

The world's first wristop dive computer, Suunto Spyder, was launched in 1997. Suunto's all-time best-selling diving computer, Suunto Vyper, was launched in 1999. Suunto Vyper was also chosen as the most popular piece of diving equipment at England's diving fair in October of 2005.

Today, Suunto D9 is undoubtedly the flagship diving product and it is also the official device used by AIDA (an international freediving organization) to measure record attempts.

Suunto's millionth dive computer was manufactured on November 1st, 2005. This unprecedented achievement was celebrated at Suunto's head office and was accompanied by a speech by CEO Juha Pinomaa, who congratulated Suunto's staff for achieving this important milestone. The gratitude is also extended to you, because without you, we could not have achieved this!

To mark its 70th anniversary, Suunto has produced an anniversary D9 computer. You can follow its journey from factory to consumer at Suunto.com, or in the next installment of Suunto Inside Diving. Who will be the lucky diver to get it? Stay online and find out.
