Suunto Experience Story

My Suunto Experience...

"You'll not see fresh snow in July!" was the advice to our party of 29 as we embarked on the month long mountaineering expedition to a remote part of East Greenland in 2004.

Three days of glorious weather saw us making many first ascents with summit heights accurately recorded with our various Suunto's. Then it snowed and kept snowing until we were buried! No real problem at Base Camp at 1000 meters and half way along a 45 km glacier but we now treated the short range weather forecasts with caution and developed a growing reliance on the barometers on our Suunto wrist computers.

Then, 15km from base camp, another series of storms kept our sub-group huddled up in a tent for thirty six hours. A minor slip leaving the tent during the enforced inactivity resulted in a badly pulled back. My choice was do I go down to the coast a few kilometers away where there was a food stache and seek evacuation or make the harder painful journey back up to Base Camp to the main party and continue the expedition. Being barely able to stand upright meant the decision was very much weather dependent.

Laying in the tent had a enabled me to watch the weather trends against the recordings on my Suunto X6 and gave me the confidence to go for Base Camp before the next bad weather arrived. A few days there resting my back enabled me to continue the expedition and two weeks later walk out with all the team.....Group success - personal success -Thanks Suunto!
