Suunto Wins Two World-Renowned Design Awards

Suunto is proud to announce winning two awards from Good Design for the Suunto Ambit GPS watch and the Suunto Core Alu.

Suunto, a global leader in sports precision instruments, is proud to announce winning two awards from Good Design for the Suunto Ambit GPS watch and the Suunto Core Alu. Good Design is the world’s longest-running, most prestigious and recognized design program. It is organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

Good Design covers new consumer products and each year accepts several thousand submissions from manufacturers and industrial and graphic design firms from more than 48 countries. All award-winning products and graphic designs are published in Good Design’s yearbook for 2012-2013 and are listed on The Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s website.

“It's very exciting for Suunto to win a design award for two products when there are so many thousands of entries,” says Antti Kujala, head of design at Suunto. “So for both the Suunto Ambit and Suunto Core Alu to be singled out for their design is a huge honor.”

Good Design chose the Suunto Ambit GPS watch for its sleek design, specialized outdoor features, advanced training functions and its ability to be upgraded for free with new technology. The Ambit was fully designed and manufactured in Finland by Thomas Hinskens, senior industrial designer at Suunto.

“We wanted the design of the Suunto Ambit to be able to withstand the test of time,” explains Hinskens. “We didn’t go for trendy, but rather with design elements that are more subtle and will age nicely.”

The Suunto Alu received recognition based on its design inspired by the original 1936 March Compass and Suunto’s 75 year heritage in precision outdoor instruments. Suunto’s Core Alu designer, Timo Yliluoma, simplified the front watch face cover to an all-metal casing with contrasting clear graphics and a comfortable wristband, resulting in an ageless timepiece with a contemporary fit and finish.
