Suunto is proud to announce it is the headline sponsor of the 2012 Vertical Blue, one of the world's largest freediving events. Organised by the record-breaking freediver and Suunto Ambassador William Trubridge, the nine-day competition begins on November 20th at the epic freediving site, Dean's Blue Hole. Plunging to a depth of 203m (666ft), it's the world's deepest blue hole of its kind. With over 50 of the world's top freedivers taking part, the 2012 Suunto Vertical Blue promises to be an incredible showcase of elite freediving. Suunto, the world's leading dive computer brand, is also the official depth gauge used at all AIDA World Record freedive attempts.

Mika Holappa, Dive Business Unit Director from Suunto, says: "Suunto has worked with William Trubridge for many years and he's an outstanding athlete. We are very proud to be this year's headline sponsor of the Suunto Vertical Blue."

William Trubridge, organizer, says: "What makes Vertical Blue a special event is that it gives the athletes free reign to mine their aquatic potential. None of the concerns of boat rides, fickle weather conditions or irate taxi drivers affect the venue of Dean's Blue Hole. Essentially the competitors are like chemists in a spotless laboratory — free to conduct controlled experiments on what their body can tolerate in an airless world. It's great to have Suunto on board as the official partner and timer."

About Vertical Blue:
Vertical Blue is one of the world's largest freediving events. For the 2012 Suunto Vertical Blue, 56 athletes from 21 countries will compete over nine days to determine who is the world’s deepest man and woman — and for a chance to bring home some of the $20,000 prize pool, the biggest ever in the sport.

Comments Trubridge: "The deepest dives will last in excess of four minutes, but that's not four minutes of holding your breath in your bathtub: it's four minutes of propelling yourself through the water column while combatting pressures that would crush a soccer ball to the size of a tennis ball and which exert mind-numbing narcosis."

About Trubridge:
Trubridge learnt to swim at the age of 18 months, and was freediving to 15m by the age of eight, competing with his older brother to to see who could bring back a stone from the deepest depth. But it was not until he was 22 that he discovered competition. Since then he has broken numerous freediving records. He was the first man to break the 100m depth barrier completely unassissted — without the use of fins, rope or weights in 2010. He also holds the record for ‘Free Immersion’, where divers descend and ascend by pulling on a rope. His record stands at 121m. His competition personal best for static apnea (holding breath) is 7’29. In May 2012 he reached 125m in 'Constant Weight', diving with just a monofin for propulsion, but the record was disallowed on a technicality.
