SUUNTO EU DATA ACT NOTICE

This notice provides pre-contractual information in accordance with Articles 3(2) and 3(3) of Regulation (EU) 2023/2854 on harmonised rules on fair access to and use of data (the Data Act). It applies to data generated by the connected products and related services of Suunto Oy, a Finnish company (business ID 0101084-1) having its registered office at Tammiston Kauppatie 7 A, 01510 Vantaa, Finland (hereinafter “Suunto”). 


1. Scope of This Notice
 

This notice covers product data, related service data, and associated metadata generated by Suunto’s connected products and services. It includes: 

  • Raw data: Unprocessed sensor measurements and device-generated information. 
  • Pre-processed data: Basic calculations and standardised formats derived directly from raw data.  
  • Metadata provided with your data: To ensure you can properly interpret and use your data, Suunto provides metadata alongside all raw and pre-processed data. This metadata includes measurement context, device information, data quality indicators, file specifications and other technical details necessary for data interpretation. This metadata is essential for understanding your data and enables seamless sharing with third-party services and applications. All metadata is provided in standardised, machine-readable formats (JSON, FIT, GPX) at no additional cost. 


It does not include inferred or derived data, such as insights generated through algorithms or additional processing.

2. Your rights under the Data Act
 

The Data Act grants you specific rights regarding data generated by your Suunto devices and services: 

  • Right to access your data without undue delay and free of charge  
  • Right to share data with third parties of your choice 
  • Right to request data in machine-readable format (such as FIT, GPX, JSON) 


3. Suunto Connected Products
 

Suunto connected products include smartwatches, GPS sports watches, dive computers, and other wearable devices. 


3.1 Data Generation
 

  • Types of data: Device usage, sensor readings (e.g., heart rate, GPS, altitude), device settings, error logs. 
  • Format: JSON, FIT, GPX 
  • Volume: From kilobytes to gigabytes depending on usage. Typical monthly data volume varies from 0 KB to 2 MB. 
  • Frequency: Real-time or continuous during activity.


3.2 Storage
 

  • On-device: Temporary or persistent depending on system needs 
  • Cloud: Stored securely for up to 10 years or until account deletion 
  • Overwriting: Some data may be automatically overwritten during device operation 


4. Suunto Related Services
 

Suunto’s related services include the Suunto App, Sports Tracker, and associated cloud services. 


4.1 Data Collection and Generation
 

  • Collected from devices: Workout data, health metrics, GPS tracks 
  • Generated by services: Training insights, social interactions (likes, comments), analytics 
  • Volume: Kilobytes to gigabytes per day depending on user activity 
  • Access: Via Suunto App or Sports Tracker 
  • Retention: Up to 10 years or until account deletion 


5. Accessing Your Data
 

You may access or share product and related service data in accordance with Articles 4 and 5 of the Data Act. 

  • Access methods: Via Suunto App, Sports Tracker, or by submitting a request to Suunto Customer Support 
  • Format: JSON, NDJSON, GPX, FIT, CSV 
  • Account requirement: A valid Suunto account linked to the relevant product 
  • Deletion: Via app settings or account termination 


6. Use of Data by Suunto
 

Suunto may process readily available data to: 

  • Provide and improve services 
  • Ensure product functionality and security 
  • Prevent fraud or misuse 
  • Develop new features 
  • Comply with legal obligations 


7. Third-Party Sharing
 

Data may be shared with: 

  • Partner services (e.g., Adidas Running, MapMyRun) if the user consents 
  • Suunto’s data processors for service provision 
  • Other third parties only with user agreement 

Suunto does not share data with gatekeepers under Regulation (EU) 2022/1925. 


7.1 Data Processors
 

Suunto uses the following main categories of data processors to provide and improve our services: 

Cloud infrastructure and database service providers: 

  • Microsoft Azure - Cloud computing service 
  • Location: EU/EEA 
  • MongoDB Atlas – Database service provider
  • Location: EU/EEA

All data processors are contractually bound to process your data only in accordance with our instructions and to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data.  


7.2 How to share your data with third parties 
 

You have the right to request that Suunto shares your data with third-party services and applications. Here's how: 

  • Requesting data sharing: 
  1. Through Suunto App integrated partners: Suunto App → Profile → Partner services 
  1. For Suunto App non-integrated partners and Sports Tracker non-integrated third parties: by submitting a request to Suunto Customer Support 

Please note: previously shared data remains with the third party; contact them directly for deletion. 


8. Trade Secrets
 

Unless otherwise stated, the readily available data does not contain any trade secrets. Suunto is the holder of any such trade secrets and may restrict access to them in accordance with applicable law. 


9. Contract Duration and Termination
 

  • Duration: Linked to the lifecycle of your Suunto account 
  • Termination: You may delete your account at any time 
  • Effect: Upon termination, all associated data will be deleted or anonymized, unless retention is required by law. This action may be non-reversible 


10. Complaints
 

You have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent authority designated under Article 37 of the Data Act in the Member State of your habitual residence, place of work or establishment.

12. Updates to this Notice
 

The information in this Data Act Notice may change during the lifetime of your Suunto product or the duration of your service contract. We will update this notice when there are changes to data types collected or generated, modifications to data storage arrangements or retention periods, updates to data access methods or procedures, changes to data processors or third-party sharing arrangements, new features that affect data generation or usage, or regulatory changes requiring updated disclosures. 

For significant changes, you will receive email notification to your registered address and in-app notification. Minor updates will be posted in the Suunto App and on our website.
