The battery of Suunto Ambit3 Sport or Ambit3 Run lasts up to 100 hours with GPS. Their big brother, Ambit3 Peak, has a battery that is twice as big. The battery duration on a single charge depends on how the watch is used and in what conditions. Low temperatures, for example, reduce the duration of a single charge. The capacity of rechargeable batteries also generally decreases over time.
The battery icon indicates the charge level of the battery. When the battery charge level is less than 10 %, the battery icon blinks for 30 seconds. When the battery charge level is less than 2 %, the battery icon blinks continuously.
Charge the battery by attaching it to your computer with the supplied USB cable, or charge with an USB-compatible wall charger or battery-pack. It takes approximately 2–3 hours to fully charge an empty battery.
OPTIMIZE THE GPS SETTINGS
You can define the GPS fix interval using the GPS accuracy setting in Movescount or in the Movescount App. The shorter the interval, the better the accuracy during exercise. By increasing the interval and lowering the accuracy, you can extend the battery life.
The GPS accuracy options are:
- Best: ~1 sec fix interval, highest power consumption
- Good: ~5 sec fix interval, moderate power consumption
- OK: ~60 sec fix interval, lowest power consumption
- Off: no GPS fix
The GPS accuracy options can be edited under each Sport mode in Movescount (under your watches).
It is important to note that the GPS accuracy setting only affects tracking. If the GPS accuracy setting of your sport mode is Good or lower and you start navigating, the GPS accuracy will switch to Best. Battery consumption is therefore higher.
CUSTOMIZE THE SPORT MODES TO YOUR NEEDS
You can customize different sport modes for different sports and needs either in Movescount or with the Movescount App. In the sport modes you can for example define the GPS accuracy settings that were discussed above.
In Movescount you can choose which pods are used in different sport modes.
Another sport mode setting that has a remarkable impact on battery life is the use of peripheral devices like a heart rate belt. If the HR belt is added to a sport mode and paired with the watch, the watch will automatically start searching for it and keep searching through out the entire exercise. So if you do not intend to use a HR belt in that particular sport, take it of the sport mode as well. The watch uses more power when searching for the peripheral device than it would if the device would be found and connected.
NOTICE CHALLENGING GPS CONDITIONS
GPS uses more power when searching for satellites than when it has already found them. Therefore it is wise to sync your watch with Movescount and get the latest satellite orbit data. The data helps the watch to locate the satellites quicker – and thus saves battery.
Challenging GPS conditions, like big rock walls, high buildings, tunnels etc. also increase the GPS’s power needs. When the GPS is in trouble, it has to search more – and will consume more battery.
