Underwater explorer Jill Heinerth is famous for her daring diving exploits, from thrilling cave dives to adventures inside icebergs, but this May she set out on a challenge of an altogether different nature – to cycle across her native Canada spreading the word about water literacy along the way.

Jill and husband Robert set out from Vancouver, British Columbia in May 2013 with almost 7,000 km separating them from the finish line in Newfoundland. “My husband Robert McClellan and I arrived at "Mile 0", the Terry Fox Monument in St. John's Newfoundland on 15 August. The trip was one of the most challenging things either of us has ever taken on, and was very rewarding.”

“Along the way, we met audiences large and small, sharing our mission of spreading water literacy through the project. We're incredibly grateful for all the continued support from our friends at Suunto who have embraced the project wholeheartedly,” says Heinerth. The fulfillment of a life-long dream, the trip was about much more than just adventure. The We Are Water project is aiming to build a movement that unites people in positive experiences in the outdoors – enjoying adventure and challenge, and fostering stewardship of natural resources.

Jill’s award-winning documentary, We Are Water, which explores the intricate and often overlooked ways in which clean water is essential to the health of the human race, picked up the Best in Show at this year’s Cinema Verde Environmental Film and Arts Festival.
