Why We Built Suunto AI Coach

Sports — 15 Οκτωβρίου 2026

Your watch already knows a lot about you. Every run and every climb. Every night of sleep, every resting heart rate reading, every shift in heart rate variability. Every hour of load you have put into your legs this season. Across a year of training, that adds up to a detailed and honest picture of an athlete.

Recording that picture and reading it are two different skills.

Most of the athletes we talk to are not short of data. They are short of a straight answer about what it means for tomorrow morning. That is the gap Suunto AI Coach was built to close.

The Question Behind Every Screen

Open any training app and the question underneath is nearly always the same. What should I do next?

Not in the abstract. Today, with these legs, this week of load behind you and that race on the calendar in front of you. It is a simple question, and until now most apps answered it sideways: here is a chart, here is a score, here is a trend line. All true, all useful, and all still asking you to do the interpreting.

Experienced athletes learn to do that interpreting well. It takes years, and it is a skill separate from the one they actually came for. Everyone else looks at a good chart, takes a guess and trains on the guess.

A Coach You Can Ask

So we built something you can ask. Suunto AI Coach is an AI-powered conversational coaching experience in the Suunto app. It turns your Suunto data into insight, guidance and action, and it answers from the history already sitting in your account.

Ask it in your own words:

“How are my sleep and recovery trending?”

“I have intervals planned today but my legs feel heavy. Should I swap for an easy run?”

“I'm bored of my usual long-run route. Find me three 16 km loops from Töölö for Saturday. Show me where they go and how the climbs compare.”

What comes back is built from your workouts, your daily activity, your sleep stages, your HRV, your recovery and your training load. An answer about your training, built from your training.

Ask, Understand, Decide, Act

An answer on a screen is only worth something if you can do something with it. That is the part we cared most about getting right.

Suunto AI Coach carries the conversation through to the thing you were going to do anyway. Ask for a session and it builds a structured workout. Ask for somewhere to run and it generates real route options with elevation profiles, which you can compare and edit. Save your choice in the Suunto app and sync it to your watch, so the answer is waiting for you when you head out the door.

Ask. Understand. Decide. Act. Four steps, and the aim is to make the distance between them as short as we can.

Built on What Suunto Already Knows

Two things made this possible now.

The first is context. A general AI assistant knows only what you paste into it. Suunto AI Coach starts from the training, recovery and route history already in your Suunto account, so your first question starts from your own data rather than a blank page.

The second is everything Suunto has built in 90 years of making tools for people who train and explore outdoors. Route planning, structured workouts, training plans, training load, recovery, navigation, offline maps. Suunto AI Coach makes the capabilities of your Suunto App and watch easier to access and use, with guidance grounded in your own data. When it hands you a route, it is using the route planner you already know.

It Starts With Race 3S

Suunto AI Coach launches on 15 October 2026 alongside Race 3S, and every Race 3S activated through the Suunto app by 31 December 2026 includes three months of it.

Race 3S is a natural first home for it. Flagship trail performance in a compact titanium case, with 38 hours of dual-band GPS battery life, a 2,000-nit AMOLED display and free global offline maps. It is a watch built for long days and serious training blocks, which is exactly when knowing what to do next matters most.

Getting started takes three steps. Open the Suunto app, pair and register your Race 3S, and start asking.

What Comes Next

In early 2027, access expands to more Suunto watches. We will share the details closer to the time.

Until then, the athletes using it are the ones shaping it. We have tested this for months internally, but months of real training, real questions and real conditions will teach us far more than we could learn on our own. Share your feedback through Suunto Support.

Good to Know

Suunto AI Coach gives you general training, recovery and outdoor guidance based on the data available to it. It is not a medical service, and AI-generated answers can occasionally be incomplete or incorrect. Use your own judgement, particularly around health, training load, weather, navigation and personal safety. Review any route before you follow it.

Beyond that, just ask.
